Saying goodbye to CDs!!

Aside from buying my music on disc, as I like having a hardcopy backup, I will no longer be using CD’s thanks to this head unit. First off, it works fantastically with my iPhone 3GS, which I assume almost everyone buying this head unit will also have (or an iPod at minimum). Plug in the iPhone and it recognizes the entire library in about 3 seconds (I believe the older IDA-X305, no S, would sometimes give people problems with recognizing their iPhone/iPod. I’ve had no such problems so far). This is INCREDIBLY nice, as before I had my music collection on 6-7 mp3 CD’s. Searching for what you want to listen to is a breeze and functions similarly to an iPod Classic. As a side note, when you plug in the iPhone, it automatically switches to iPod mode and starts playing where the currently playing song on the iPod left off. Some people may be annoyed by this if you just want to charge your iPhone, but it’s more convenient than not, considering it’s the mode you’ll probably use the most. Maybe Alpine should have made it an optional setting.

I can’t comment too much on Pandora. I don’t use it often, but it’s nice that it’s there. It takes a little longer before the music starts compared to the iPod function. Usually about 10 maybe 15 seconds tops, before music from Pandora starts playing.

Stereo presets are a bit weird to set, but it’s not overly complicated. That’s the price of having so few buttons on the face.

The screen is perfect for navigating selections. A full function LCD is so much nicer than the one or two lines of text on most of other head units. If you’re OCD like me and have album artwork for every song on your iPhone, you’ll appreciate the beautiful LCD screen even more. Some people may find the screen too bright at night, but it can be turned down I believe with a dimmer setting.

Sound quality is very good in my opinion, especially for just a head unit. I’m not using an external amp. I had an Alpine CDA-9856 head unit before this one and this one sounds noticeably better. Perhaps Alpine used the additional available space and reduced cost of omitting the CD player to put in a better internal amp? Maybe, but my cynicism makes me think otherwise.

So after all of my glorification of this head unit you may be asking, why only four stars? Lack of value in my opinion. Receivers cheaper than this give you many features that Alpine makes you pay extra for, and they aren’t cheap either. Buying just the imprint processor (stock EQ’s are fairly basic, probably on purpose so you’ll buy this addon) and bluetooth phone kit will cost almost as much as the head unit itself. Then there’s HD radio and satellite tuners to potentially buy as well. If you’re buying Alpine though, you are probably already expecting not to get much bang for your buck.

All in all, if you have an iPhone/iPod and the money, this head unit is for you. You will be hard pressed to find a head unit that gives you better control of it than this.

Perfect Head Unit for iPhone Users

Installed this last weekend and love it!!

All my music is on my iPhone so I wanted a head unit that functioned well with the iPhone. Songs load quickly and scrolling through the head unit interface is easy – very similar to the iPhone itself. I love the artwork display – looks very good on the LCD screen.

Sound quality is good although I probably need to upgrade from factory speakers to really take advantage of it.

The detachable face unit is a plus for deterring theft.

Being that it is expandable it is nice to know I have the option to add bluetooth, HD radio, CD changer or satellite radio down the road if I want. I’m glad these weren’t included because then the overall cost would be higher and right now I’m not using any of them.

Bottom line: If you are an iPhone / iPod music person and don’t need CDs, this is the head unit suited for you.

***********Update 12/23/10

1. Just found out I can play RHAPSODY through this which is AWESOME. Now you can listen to any song on demand, anywhere! You can’t control the iPhone through the x305s when you’re using Rhapsody but at least it works!

To use rhapsody make sure the X305s is on iPhone USB connection and then just open up Rhapsody.

Great Sound but Value is missing.

Set up with an Alpine PDX-5 Amp, 12″ Boston Acoustics G5 Sub, and Stock JBL Speakers 6.5 Front 6×9 Rear in a 2010 Toyota Camry.

Surprisingly, the stock JBLs are holding up extremely well. I’ve received a lot of compliments on how great my system sounds. So Audio Quality is top notch. Features are also great with the IPOD functionality and Control. Tested the Pandora on a friend’s IPHONE and set up was quick and easy. Far better than having to pay for satellite radio.

Now the negatives. It is Bluetooth READY not Bluetooth INCLUDED. It will require a BT Adapter which will cost another $100-150 more! The head unit cost just jumped to $400! For $250, you can grab a Kenwood KDC-X994 that also has the Pandora feature and already has the BT Adapter built in. I didn’t mind at first because the Audio Quality pretty much evened out the negatives. That is until, I got the Alpine 400BT installed.

With the IDA x305 and x305S, you need to take extra steps in setting up your BT! After activating the BT Feature on the radio, I had to reset the radio, take off the faceplate, put the faceplate back on, turn the ignition off, turn the ignition on, turn it off again, then finally turn it back on just to pair the head unit with my phone! My installer and I didn’t know the magical steps until after I had to call Alpine tech support. So after finally getting my BT up and running, I make my test call and more bad news. The call quality is bad, the person I called could tell I was either on speakerphone or on a BT headset. What’s worse is, the person I called could hear themselves echo on their side!

To summarize, if all you’re looking for a is a great head unit that will give you top notch audio quality, get this head unit. If you need bluetooth, go for the Kenwood. That’s what I’ll be doing after I sell this H/U.

This is what I’ve been waiting for. This mount places the unit at the perfect height and leaves no marks on the windshield or dashboard. It holds steady and does not slide. Works as advertised!! I wish I had bought this unit long ago. Easy to hide and set up and works perfectly. If you’ve got a radar detector do yourself a favor and buy this unit. It’s worth every penny!

Just right

I purchased this unit when I discovered that it is illegal to have a radar detector hanging on your windshield in California. Not illegal to have the detector, mind you, just to have it mounted on your windshield.

I am totally satisfied with this unit. I am using it in a Toyota Tacoma, and it is stable under most driving conditions and does not slide around as I feared it might. It has the added advantage of not rattling, which my detector did when mounted with suction cups. I have tested it with some spirited driving on the mountain roads and have not had any problems, your mileage may vary depending on how you define spirited.

It is also a snap to move the unit if you want it out of sight, or to set on the floor if you are in a situation where you don’t want/need a radar detector. ( Off road, for example)

This unit is worth the price just to get suction cups out of your life. I highly recommend it.

Has its plusses and minuses

I purchased this about a month ago for my Passport radar detector that i have in my Toyota Tacoma. So far i have mixed feelings

The Pros:

1) Does a surprisingly good job of not sliding side-to-side on the dashboard, even when i take a sharp corner relatively fast.

2) The suction cup that attaches the mounting attachment to the beanbag seems very high quality and so far has not released.

3) Dont have to deal with my detector falling off the windshield while driving or after sitting in the sun all day.

The Cons:

1) My Tacoma has a relatively shallow dashboard (and slightly slanted) and if i drive on too bumpy of a road the mount will eventually move towards the windshield and the radar detector will vibrate against it. I have found myself having to pull the mount back towards me several times a trip if the road is rough. Highway driving is no problem and if your dashboard is deep or level you probably wouldnt have this issue.

2) I chose to attach my detector to the mounting attachment using the provided velcro. I live in Arizona and have found that the desert sun melts the sticky side of the velcro during the day. I am going to try the other provided tape and if that doesnt work will probably have to wrap a rubberband or something else around the unit to keep it in place.

3) I’m worried that if i leave the beanbag on the dash all the time that you might see a circle as the dash fades from the sun. I try to either put up my window shade or set the unit on the floor if its going to be in the sun all day.

Like i said, overall if have mixed feelings. If i can come up with something to stop the beanbag from vibrating towards the windshield i think i will be happy with it. I’ll post and update if i come up with something

Audiophile-Quality Head Unit

Anyone who has owned an aftermarket Head Unit(HU) can tell you that there is a definitive amount of quality between lower price and upper price HU’s.
Being an audiophile, i have heard and owned many, many HU’s. My last HU was a Pioneer DEH-P8600MP. Pioneer’s top quality HU next to the 9600 at the time it came out. After purchasing this Alpine CDA-117, i had very high expectations with which i was going to compare this HU to. First of all they both use 24bit Burr-Brown Digital-to-Analong Converters (24bit DACs) so you get the most information from the CD player, or ipod to the speakers as possible.

Secondly, a feature i wish my Pioneer HU had, is the ability to defeat, or cancel, the CDA-117′s internal MOSFET Amplifiers, and send the signal directly from the CD or ipod to the external amplifier (if your using one) and then to the speakers. This allows you to crank the volume considerably with less signal distortion on the beaten path(from the source to the speakers).

This HU also has a very intuitive User-interface(menu system) and the scroll wheel is second to none in terms of usability and control. The HU has a very bright display, and it is also recessed(sunk in under the plastic casing) so that when the sunlight hits the display, you can still see the words very clear. I have no complaints for this HU except that the tuning options are a little less than my previous model HU, but Pioneer decks can be a little overkill with tuning options, and sometimes they are better left alone if you aren’t familiar with what they achieve. All in all, this is an audiophile-quality deck, with more than enough features for the most experienced tuners. I believe this unit is the successor to the Alpine CDA-9886, and that unit is revered in the audio community. If nothing else, go to your local best buy and see if they have one of these on display, you will not be unimpressed!

Sounds great! Terrible User Interface!

First, the bad, because I found a lot.

I’m finding my purchase of this head unit CDA-117 to be a fairly disappointing experience. It sounds great, but it’s the most frustratingly difficult and distracting interface I can imagine possible. How Alpine came to develop this to be so insanely counter-intuitive escapes me. There are many serious flaws with this player, in terms of safety and distraction during driving. Do not even attempt searching for a song while driving. It’s impossible. Then on top of that, the previous/next buttons are the same shape and size as half the other buttons. If I see the phrase “BANKING” while it’s scanning USB one more time, I’m gonna flip out. seriously, why can’t you just navigate folder directory!?!?!?!

As a software developer and user experience consultant, I’m absolutely amazed at how terrible this experience has been.

1). Volume/Mute completely unavailable when “BANKING” appears, forcing you to escape the operation to change volume.
2). What is the relevance of BANK1, BANK2? What is that supposed to tell me? It seems like an arbitrarily selected random collection.
3). Larger than 1000 song collections: UNUSABLE.
4). Scrolling is terrible. ONE item per turn? Have you even attempted to search for anything whatsoever with this thing?
5). Volume press is FAR too sensitive, bringing up search function instead of volume control at least 90% of the time.
6). BIGGEST FLAW: previous/next buttons
7). Display is completely annoying. I don’t need an ipod icon, i need meta information. Without this stupid icon the display would not need to annoyingly scroll the artist, album, track info. STUPID!!!!!

Now the Good:

This player sounds absolutely phenomenal, and the audio controls are excellent. Clearly this is where Alpine spends it’s time in development and not the user interface.

Ipod connects with no issues, as did usb powered external hard drive. Don’t bother with a large collection though.

Overally, I’m happy with it, but those annoying things at the beginning will force me to reconsider Alpine in the future.

Here’s a tip Alpine: instead of constantly churning out new units all the time with a myriad of differences, how about you actually perfect a single product before releasing it?

Excellent sound quality and hard to beat in performance and price

This HU is about the best you can buy especially given the price range. It has the Brown-Burr decoder which is the cats meow in terms of reading information and sending the right signals to the amp/speakers so they can reproduce them. It will pull details out of CD’s that you probably never heard before AND you will hear beats and sounds in pristine detail. I was coming from an old Eclipse deck (before they sold out) which had a brown burr decoder and 8volt preouts. It was my favorite of all time deck but this Alpine is better. Granted the preouts are not as hefty but I feel that 4volts can get the job done if you are connecting an external amp. What is awesome about the Alpine is the immediate interface to connect your IPOD and control it from the scrolling main knob. Most of your tasks can be accomplished by simply scrolling the one center knob and pushing it as a button. Very cool in traffic and what not to whizz through your playlists. The BIO lite display is actually really cool looking and very easy to read- it seems that glare does not interfere with its glow. Its a soft but very solid and easily read display. It has a tuners delight with time alignment, cross overs and two methods of equalizing the bands to dial in your preferences. With a good amp and speakers you really shouldn’t have to stray too far from 0 but it does in fact tune with very nice precision. Time alignment is a huge bonus as you can adjust your sound stage for all your speakers to hit your ears at the same time. This is a very nice feature and definitely worth looking for in a HU. There’s a mathematical formula to set the time alignment-you can use it or just wing it by your ears. It makes a big difference. Ive read complaints about the slowness of the IPOD interface but have experienced no problems and rate it very highly in terms of speed reading and ability to read MP3′s with the most detail. It also has a media expander which sounds like a gimmick but no sir, not from Alpine. Ive noticed that it really can richen up the detail in music with three varying levels of expansion on the tuner, MP3 and CD sources. Its awesome. The internal 18rms amplifier can provide mediocre power until you get an amp but consider the simple KTP 445 in addition to this deck. Simple plug and play and trust me, with the right component speakers and insulation, you can call it a true sound system. Bumps it up to 45rms and its a powerful, clean signal that is comparable to high end, high power, bigger amplifers. I am amazed every time I get in my truck that an amp that small can produce that much detail in music. Its truely respectable. Ive spent 4 thousands dollars on old systems but this time around wanted to stay within reason. This deck, the KTP 445, some sweet components, rear full range for fill and your choice of boom in the back. Alpine makes some great stuff and these days, its nice to have quality sound at very affordable prices. I have a lot of respect for Alpine. They make really good stuff.

Good tv.

Good TV. I mean not for the TV enthusiast. Got if for my grandmother to replace her 500 year old tube tv. She needed something simple so she wouldn’t need lots of remotes and chaining inputs and stuff to watch a DVD. The tv has fine picture, not great. If you are looking for a sharp nice pictures get quality brand like Vizio, Samsung, Sony, etc…. there is a reason they cost more. BUT for her It works just perfectly and she can watch some DVDs and Cable. So five stars to that.

About what I expected for the money

Ok, going into this purchase I understood that I wasn’t buying a top of the line piece of electronic equipment, but when something is listed as a feature I expect it to work as advertised. All I have been able to get out of the built in dvd player is 480i resolution. For something that advertises an upscaling dvd player as part of the package, that is unacceptable. It may be that I haven’t found something in the settings, but if it’s there I also can’t find it in the documentation or through emailing tech support.

Another issue with this tv is that the sound level seems set to one output -LOUD.

Those issues aside, the tv is cheap. For my purposes (preschool age kids’ playroom), it suits it’s purpose as something that may accidentally get damaged by a flying wiimote. Any other purpose and I would return this for something else.

its really got a great picture for a 720 hdtv. i love all the extra features on this tv. we also use it in our rv when we go fishing. the dvd player is very handy. then we can take the memory card out of the camera and check out our fishing pictures on our tv. i just love it.
